PETA Wants Eight Belles Jockey To Be Suspended

And so it begins.  The animal rights organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, wants the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority to suspend Gabriel Saez, the jockey who road Eight Belles in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, until an investigation can be conducted.

No pun intended, but that’s putting the cart before the horse.  Jockey’s aren’t among the wealthy elite.  He should be allowed to ride and earn a living until an investigation is concluded.  Then and only then they should determine what, if any, punishment is appropriate.

I watched the race and the subsequent replays.  Saez didn’t appear to do anything differently than the other Jockeys, and at no time did Eight Belles ever appear to have been injured up to and including when she crossed the finish line.  I’m not sure how Saez can be at fault.
